Rebecca Alebiosu scored 34 points as the Crocus Plainsmen opened the Coffee Culture Java Jam with a 65-36 win over the Portage Saints at Crocus on Thursday.

Jordyn Espy paced the Saints with 10 points in the first game of the varsity girls’ basketball tournament.

Meanwhile, Jessie Sumner recorded 15 points with Kypling Black adding 14 as the Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Neelin Spartans 65-34. Danielle Asham led Neelin with 12 points.

The No. 1-ranked Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg rolled over the Selkirk Royals 92-18 as Lille Vande Graaf netted 25.

In JV action, the Warren Wildcats edged the Vikings 48-47 with Mackenzie Boonstra netting a game-high 20 points. Hannah McGregor led Massey with 18.

The Crocus JVs and freshmen mixed their teams and played an exciting 54-53 contest, awarding the JV squad a win for seeding purposes as the event continues today.

St. Paul beat Selkirk 55-21 in the other game.

The 7:45 p.m. games ended after deadline.

Games take place throughout the day at Crocus, Neelin and Massey. Teams cross over for single-game playoffs against the team with the same respective finish — first and first play for gold on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.
