Alternative Group is celebrating a double victory at the 2025 Manitoba Nursery Landscape Association (MBNLA) Awards of Excellence.

The first award, the Award of Merit for Design, which was presented for the Sten Blomst property, celebrates the exceptional landscape design that maximized the space’s potential. The second award, the Garden Centre Award of Excellence, marked the third consecutive year its Garden Centre has been honoured.

The awards recognized the company’s superior craftsmanship, innovative designs, and unwavering commitment to excellence in Manitoba’s landscape industry, marketing manager Mike Mair told the Sun on Thursday.

Mair explained the Sten Blomst project presented unique challenges, including a large training role and a sloped yard, adding the design incorporated elements such as multi-level terraces with retaining walls, a striking granite water feature, and a pollinator-friendly plant selection.

“We are incredibly proud of our team,” Mair said. “Their craftsmanship and creativity brought this design to life. The project represents the dedication we pour into each of our designs, ensuring that both the environment and the client’s needs are prioritized.”

He added the Garden Centre Award of Excellence was presented to retail garden centres that excel in several key areas, including staff training, career development, community engagement, sustainable practices and technological advancements in horticulture.

“Our team’s dedication to supporting the community, promoting gardening, and continually improving every aspect of our operations is truly remarkable,” Mair said. “This award exemplifies the core values that guide us: building superior workmanship by people who care.”

These accolades, he explained, follow a remarkable history of recognition for Alternative Group, including a 2023 Canadian Landscaping Award of Distinction for their garden centre. As Mair noted, the company’s success is built on the dedication of its employees across all departments, from the garden centre staff to the landscape design and build teams.

“We believe that it’s not just about creating beautiful spaces but about how we operate and interact with our community,” Mair explained. “Our goal is to create memorable experiences for our clients and foster long-lasting relationships within our community.”

Looking ahead, Alternative Group’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering. Mair emphasized that clients can continue to expect a high level of service, dedication, and community-oriented values as the company moves forward.

“We want every client to leave satisfied, whether it’s after purchasing a product or having a project built,” Mair said. “We’re not just about the finished product, but about building memories and making our garden centre a destination for families.”
