• 60 YEARS AGO — Gord Taylor and his fine Rivers rink of third Len Harvey, second Tom Smith and lead Harry Parker regained the Manitoba-Northwestern Ontario Legion curling title over the weekend at Lac du Bonnet.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Three goals by Blair Fordyce paced Kenton to a 9-6 victory over Shoal Lake in the opening game of the best-of-three North Central Hockey League semifinals. Single goals for Kenton came from Gene Hodgson, Gordie Allen, Don Gray, Rick Hamilton, Gary Draper and Brock Curtis, while replying for Shoal Lake were Ken Wowryk and Dave Doygall, both with three goals.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Hamiota’s Ross Fraser became the eighth winner of the Gord McGunigal Memorial Award at the Association of Competitive Curlers’ annual banquet in Brandon yesterday. Fraser, 59, received the award for both his contributions as a curler and organizer in western Manitoba.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Riley Day delivered a devastating knockdown punch to punctuate his Brandon Wheat Kings debut. Day dropped Regina Pats defenceman Derek Reinhart with a shot right on the button three seconds into the second period in a scrap that seemed to spark the Wheat Kings, who promptly scored twice in the next 59 seconds on their way to a 7-3 triumph over the Regina Pats.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Brett Orr of Elkhorn scored one goal and assisted on two others as the Portage Terriers earned a 6-3 Manitoba Junior Hockey League victory over the Selkirk Steelers.
