In response to the enactment of tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States on March 4, the City of Brandon has decided to look at the creation of a task force that will report directly to city council on an as-needed basis.

“The City of Brandon stands united with our nation, which is crucial for protecting jobs and investments in our community,” Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett said in a press release. “By prioritizing core services and ensuring value for Brandon residents, we are committed to working closely with our federal and provincial partners. We will continue to closely monitor the evolving tariff situation and strive to minimize its impacts on our residents and businesses.”

In a call with the Sun, Fawcett said that the task force will be made up of members from the city’s management team that will keep council updated with procurement costs and review costs on projects that are being moved forward.

“Who even knows what the costs of things are going to be?” Fawcett told the Sun Tuesday afternoon. “Just over the next week, they’ll review things. If something comes up, they’ll give us a report at the next council meeting.”

Fawcett said it was important to support the federal and provincial governments in their efforts to safeguard the economy. And he also echoed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comments made earlier in the day about the strange optics of treating enemies like friends and longtime allies as enemies.

“I do agree with a lot of the comments made by the prime minister today,” Fawcett said. “It’s upsetting and disturbing that the U.S. government is picking fights with its allies. All we know is that we’re in these turbulent times, caused by people, not by events.”
