Mecca Productions, a Westman theatre company, will be offering VIP tickets to their next show, “Mamma Mia,” scheduled for mid-April at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

Theatregoers can grab a snack and a drink before the performance, says Lisa Vasconcelos, Mecca’s founder. That way people can have a bite to eat without having to worry about rushing out of a restaurant in time to make the curtain.

“I know when my husband and I go to a show, we often go out for supper first,” said Vasconcelos.

“So, we thought, what’s better for supper than appetizers? And the idea started to take shape. We’ll offer VIP passes for our ‘Mamma Mia’ shows for the folks who might want to make it a one-stop shop and support some local restaurants at the same time.”

Mecca’s production of “Mamma Mia” is scheduled for April 10-12. VIP tickets will only be offered for Thursday’s opening night and then again for Friday night. They are not available for the two performances on Saturday.

A VIP reception ticket includes appetizers and a cocktail or non-alcoholic drink served in the auditorium’s grand salon, said Vasconcelos.

On Thursday, the appetizers will be provided by Chez Angela, and on Friday, Montana’s BBQ and Bar will provide the food.

Bar staff at the WMCA have already started to work on themed drinks called Waterloo and Super Trooper, to complement the musical “Mamma Mia,” that has songs from the Swedish group, ABBA.

“For now, we’re just offering our VIP tickets for the first two nights to see if people like it and hopefully they’ll enjoy a little bit more of what the auditorium has to offer,” said Vasconcelos, adding, “I actually got the idea when I was in the grand salon during the auditorium’s 50th anniversary gala.”

The VIP ticket price is $69.25, which includes all fees.

Regular admission is $44.25 for adults and $39.25 for seniors. Students pay $34.25 and the cost for children under 12 years old is $29.25.

Kaitlyn Mitchell, WMCA’s general manager, said she loves the idea of showcasing the venue for the Thursday and Friday night performances.

“I think it will be super fun,” Mitchell said. “We were on board right away and we’re happy to try something new in our grand salon.”

During the two VIP nights, doors will open for the ticket holders at 6 p.m. and curtain rises at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday’s opening night, theatregoers will be rubbing shoulders with cast members who will also be dining in the grand salon before they go on stage.

“Don’t we just need a reason to laugh and sing right now?” said Vasconcelos. “The musical ‘Mamma Mia’ is absolutely jam-packed with all of the songs that people know. It is an absolutely guaranteed good night out. It’s funny, touching and has a love story. We’re going to have a blast.”
