Gustavo Siqueira was a man on a mission Saturday afternoon.

The six-foot-six left side blasted 13 kills and four aces to power the Windsor Lancers to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) sweep of the Western Mustangs in the consolation semifinals of the U Sports men’s volleyball championship at the Healthy Living Centre.

“The group just used all the energy we had from being upset and digesting the loss from (Friday). We used that for good today,” Siqueira said.

“We came guns blazing, a lot of energy on the court, we knew exactly what we had to do and we just performed. It was all about execution.”

Windsor enjoyed the start it hoped for a day earlier, taking advantage of a much smaller Western block compared to the giant Alberta Golden Bears, who swept Windsor Friday afternoon.

The Lancers pulled ahead 13-3 with a heavy dose of the OUA all-star Siqueira. The Brazilian put up three kills, a block and an ace.

Western stayed in it as Conor Doran, who didn’t start Friday’s 3-0 loss to Sherbrooke, subbed in for Oliver Toomes and picked up three kills amongst a handful of Windsor errors to make it 17-13.

But then the Lancers passers put the ball on OUA player of the year Markus Law-Heese’s head time and time again as he found Darian Koskie in the middle to break the run, then Siqueira three times before another Koskie kill to help put it away.

Windsor dominated early in the second set as well, going back to the balanced offence that carried them to 18-2 in the regular season. Law-Heese found all his hitters for kills and added one himself to pull ahead 17-9.

The Lancers kept their foot down and cruised to a 2-0 lead.

The third set was tied 10-10 when Siqueira took over again, hammering home three of Windsor’s next five points to lead 15-11.

They traded short runs from there, which was good enough for the Lancers to punch their ticket to Sunday’s fifth-place match at 1 p.m. It’s a meaningful one for next year’s national host.

“Extremely important. We’re just trying to make history for our program.” Siqueira said.

“Every single player on our team has that in mind and we’re trying to perform our best volleyball every single match. We have another great opportunity (Sunday) to get fifth place, which would be the best in history for us. That’s really important.”
