Hey there, time traveller!

The Brandon Sun has partnered with Brandon University and Westman Communications Group to host a Brandon-Souris candidates debate on April 23 during the 2025 federal election campaign.
This particular federal election comes at a difficult time for Canadians as our country faces pressure from the United States over issues both economic and existential.
Brandon University president David Docherty says it is vital to have these kinds of community debates that help residents engage with the questions currently before us.

“Canada faces a suddenly shifting world and this election is an important one, which is why Westman and our entire nation are paying attention,” said Docherty, himself a political scientist who has written extensively on Canada’s political system.
“One thing that’s certain is that we will see change in Brandon-Souris after longtime MLA Larry Maguire’s retirement. All of us wish him the best as he takes care of his health.”
The debate, which will be open to the public, will be live streamed by WCGtv on its website from its location at Brandon University and will be rebroadcast at a later date.
An exact location on campus will be published as we get closer to the date of the event.
The Brandon Sun will provide news coverage and commentary.
Our panel of questioners will consist of Brandon Sun columnist Deveryn Ross and BU Department of Political Science Prof. Kelly Saunders. The event will be officiated by longtime emcee Kerry Auriat.
Although most of the candidates have already been notified of the debate in advance, invitations will be sent to Brandon-Souris candidates in early April to confirm their participation.
“We have had many interesting discussions over the last two decades that I have been part of organizing political debates here in Brandon-Souris,” said Brandon Sun editor Matt Goerzen. “But I can rarely think of any previous election campaign in modern memory that had so much at stake for the future of the country.
“Brandon-Souris residents should have a chance to learn how their candidates will represent them as our country determines what that future will look like. We hope candidates will join us for a fulsome debate.”
Please watch for further updates regarding the debate, including the start time, in the leadup to the event.
