Thirteen Brandon University students are this year’s recipients of the 2025 Undergraduate Student Research Awards, which highlight exceptional talent and innovation.
The students will benefit from hands-on research this summer, working one-on-one with their supervisors and taking on “meaningful roles in cutting-edge research projects,” the university said in a news release issued on Monday.
The research from the 13 students covers a wide range of topics, including identifying cancer markers linked with chemotherapy drugs, the growth of black holes, and the effect of artificial intelligence-assisted-writing on the involvement of dopamine.

The students will work with their supervisor for 14-16 weeks in a period stretching from now until the end of August.
Research is one of the central pillars of BU’s mission, said Bernadette Ardelli, vice-president of research and graduate studies at the university.
“Our Undergraduate Student Research Award recipients take on responsibilities and leadership in research labs that would typically be reserved for graduate students elsewhere,” said Ardelli.
“This prepares them to excel in their future academic or professional careers, and we are immensely proud of their accomplishments,” she said in the release.
This year’s group also marks the 1,025th research grant awarded at BU, which is an “important milestone” as BU celebrates its 125th anniversary, stated the release.
The USRAs receive a minimum of $1,000 from BU as well as $6,000 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
