IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 50 YEARS AGO — Ann Thompson and Kevin McLachlan were named girls and boys most valuable player, respectively, at the Vincent Massey high school basketball awards banquet. Thompson and teammate Nancy Sharratt received awards for scoring more than 1,000 points in their careers.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Darren Shewchuk of the Brandon Bluefins Swim Club finished second in the 11- and 12-year-old breaststroke event during the club’s invitational long-course meet.

• 30 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 5-4 to the Kamloops Blazers in Game 5 of the WHL championship series. Scoring for Brandon were Alexandre Vasilevskii, Justin Kurtz, Marty Murray and Mike Leclerc.

• 20 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings’ selection of Sanfred King in the first round of the Western Hockey League bantam draft was just the beginning of the excitement for a number of Westman hockey players on Thursday. King was the first of eight players to be picked from Westman or just outside of the area.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Carlie Johnston went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs on Tuesday as the Vincent Massey Vikings locked up first place in the Brandon High School Girls’ Fastball League with an 8-7 win over the visiting Neelin Spartans.
