A citywide invitation has gone out to all Brandonites who want to help beautify the downtown as part of the annual Spring Downtown Community Clean-Up Day on Wednesday afternoon.

The City of Brandon and six other community organizations are hosting the event, which will go rain or shine from 1-3 p.m.

Princess Park — on the corner of Princess Avenue and Eighth Street — will be the headquarters and check-in for all volunteers. Coffee, water, juice boxes, cookies, sunscreen and hand sanitizer will be provided free of charge.

Each volunteer will receive a safety vest, gloves, garbage bags, garbage pickers and containers for any sharps they see on the ground, with training on the safe and proper way to dispose of sharps.

There will be also be waiver forms for volunteers to sign for liability, as well as consent to have their photographs taken.

Once people are ready for duty, they will be given a map and assigned specific areas to clean.

There will also be prizes available for the best-dressed team, most garbage collected and best photo.

All residents, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in the cleanup day, the city said in a news release.

“This event serves as an excellent opportunity for the community to unite and contribute to beautifying our downtown area by removing litter accumulated after the spring thaw.”

Along with the City of Brandon, the other partners in this year’s event are Prairie Mountain Health, The Women’s Resource Centre, Men’s Resource Centre, Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (Ask Auntie & Fresh Start Programs), Brandon Downtown BIZ and the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network.
