A large grass fire north of Kemnay prompted farmers to join firefighting efforts on Thursday using ag equipment as a tool.

From the scene of smouldering hills north of the Trans-Canada Highway at 6 p.m., Ryan Toews told the Sun he had been on hand for five hours helping to fight the grass fire.

Toews, a farmer out of Rivers, and Alexander farmer Matt Thiessen were driving in a pickup truck along the charred fields and shooting water from the back of a sprayer tender trailer.

Toews told the Sun he and Thiessen had repurposed the ag equipment, which typically would be used to spray chemicals for farming.

The grass fire was burning steadily late in the afternoon, travelling northeast. Winds blew at 46 kilometres an hour, gusting up to 66 km/h, alongside a temperature of 29 C, according to Environment Canada.

The Oak Lake-Sifton Fire Department was on scene but could not be reached for comment, nor could Whitehead Fire Department.

Earlier in the afternoon, the fire departments battled another blaze along Highway 250 north of Alexander with help from members of Deerboine Hutterite Colony.
