An officer shot a 54-year-old woman who was armed with a weapon and acting erratically on the Trans-Canada Highway on Monday night, RCMP say.

Carberry RCMP responded at about 9:30 p.m. after several witnesses reported an unknown person walking in and out of traffic and causing a disturbance on the highway near Road 88 West.

The first officer to arrive saw a woman climbing up onto vehicles while in possession of an edged weapon, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

The release said the officer tried to de-escalate the situation, but the woman continued to act erratically while “brandishing” the edged weapon.

The officer approached the woman and repeatedly told her to drop the weapon, but she “turned and advanced quickly toward the officer with the edged weapon,” RCMP said.

The officer then shot the woman.

Officers provided medical aid until emergency medical services arrived.

The woman, who is from the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford, was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre in stable condition with a gunshot injury. She was later transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

The officer was wearing a body camera that was activated before arriving to the scene, the RCMP release said. The video will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit, which will be handling the officer-involved shooting investigation.

The westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway from Road 87 West to Road 88 West were closed Monday night after the incident and reopened around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

A Brandon Sun staffer who was on scene around 8 a.m. Tuesday saw the westbound lanes were closed for about one kilometre and RCMP officers were directing traffic to a gravel road that runs parallel to the eastbound lanes. There was an investigation vehicle onsite and yellow markers scattered across the scene. Small pieces of debris were scattered on the westbound lanes and beside the highway.

Carberry RCMP and officers from Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
