The replacement of an almost 100-year-old watermain on First Street has been approved by council.

Council unanimously approved the contract to install a replacement at Tuesday’s regular meeting, with Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett saying the watermain “does have a Band-Aid or two on it.”

The line, which was originally installed in 1931, will be replaced from Brandon Avenue to Richmond Avenue. The almost $2.9-million contract will also include lowering three water connections, which have been prone to freezing. It will also be to replace and add select fire hydrants along First Street.

No timeline was given for when the project would start. Notices will go out to residents beforehand.

The contract was awarded to Alternative Landscaping Ltd., which presented the lower of two bids. The other bid was from Allen & Bolack Excavating Ltd., which would have been more than $3.9 million.
