A repeat sex offender from Brandon who was sentenced to more than nine years behind bars has died in prison.
Tyson Gerard Harding, 44, died of “apparent natural causes” while in custody at Stony Mountain penitentiary, Correctional Services of Canada said on Thursday.
Harding’s next of kin have been notified of his death and correctional services will review the circumstances, the agency said.
Harding was sentenced in the Brandon Court of King’s Bench in January 2023 after he pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography and child luring.
The charges stemmed from a three-year period between 2016 and 2019. Harding posed as a teenage boy online and solicited provocative photos of young girls.
Harding eventually started using computers at his work, which was a hotel, to communicate with his victims. His co-worker noticed and contacted Cybertip.ca, Canada’s national tip line for reporting the online exploitation of children, in February 2019.
After an investigation, police executed a search warrant of his residence and found 53 sexualized images of girls between the ages of 10 and 17.
Police discovered that he used Skype and a Google chat app to communicate with and get the images from the victims. He never met up with any of the victims in person.
Prior to these charges, in 2010, Harding spent 90 days in jail for possessing seven videos containing child pornography.
In 2012, he was caught violating his probation by accessing the internet and making sexually inappropriate comments to a 16-year-old girl online.
For the charges from 2019, Justice Elliot Leven sentenced him to eight and a half years for child luring and one year for possessing child pornography.
