The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is looking into the death of a dog after an officer fatally shot it in Swan Lake First Nation.

A Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer went to a home on the First Nation to make an arrest at about 7:32 a.m. on June 11.

No arrest was made, but the officer was bitten by a dog while leaving the residence, the IIU said in a news release.

A short time later, the officer returned to the residence and fatally shot the dog, the release said.

MFNPS notified the IIU of the incident on Wednesday, and the civilian director said it’s in the public’s interest for IIU to investigate.

The IIU is asking any witnesses or people who have information or video footage to contact them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

Because the investigation is ongoing, the IIU said it will not provide any more details.
