Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the arrest of a youth in Brandon last month.

Brandon Police Service received a report of a boy with an “edged weapon who was out of control” at about 1:15 p.m. on June 10, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a news release on Friday.

Officers went to the scene and identified the youth before using a “conducted energy weapon” on him and taking him into custody, the release said.

While in custody, “a second use-of-force encounter occurred,” the agency said.

The boy was transported to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, and after being examined at the hospital, he was released back into police custody.

The date and circumstances of the arrest coincide with the June 10 sword attack at École secondaire Neelin High School, in which police used a taser on the youth suspect, but officials on Friday would not confirm the incidents were the same.

The IIU received the report on Wednesday, and the civilian director determined that it’s in the public’s interest for it to investigate, the release said.

The IIU is asking witnesses or anyone who has information or video that could help with the investigation to contact them toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

Since the investigation is ongoing, no further details will be released, the IIU said.
