The Brandon-Souris Conservative Electoral District Association is hosting a retirement party for former member of Parliament Larry Maguire.

The retirement party is slated for Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. It will be in the hangar at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at 300 Commonwealth Way in Brandon.

Maguire decided not to run in the federal election last spring, and was replaced by Grant Jackson.

“Larry’s tireless efforts have laid a strong foundation for our riding,” Jackson said in a news release this week. “His leadership and vision have positioned Brandon-Souris for continued success.”

The 76-year-old Maguire took many people by surprise when he announced he would not seek re-election after Prime Minister Mark Carney called a snap election. Maguire cited health concerns as his reason for calling it a career.

In Maguire’s first shot at federal politics in 1993, he finished third. He then bounced back, winning when he ran provincially in Arthur-Virden in 1999.

Maguire won in Arthur-Virden in four consecutive elections for the Progressive Conservatives before resigning to run in Brandon-Souris in a 2013 byelection.

He narrowly won in 2013, but proceeded to win an additional three terms for the federal Conservative party.

In March, Maguire said he was planning to run again, had it not been for his health.

An official in Jackson’s office on Thursday confirmed Maguire went through an operation and “is doing very well.”

Brandon-Souris Conservative EDA president Jordan Sisson also offered his gratitude to Maguire.

“Larry has been more than a public servant, he’s been a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for so many of us,” said Sisson. “His dedication to our region and his unwavering integrity have left a legacy that will inspire future generations.”

The news release said everyone is welcome to attend the party, and tickets can be purchased by emailing votegrantjackson@gmail.com or by calling 204-720-2142.
