Brandon’s Kinsmen Pool is finally open today, after delays for repairs and tests pushed back its opening by more than a month.

The city announced in a media release Tuesday afternoon that Manitoba Health had inspected the pool and everything was good to go for kids to start splashing around and experienced swimmers to run laps.

“We’re looking forward to having it open, we’re looking forward to seeing the public out using it, and we hope everybody enjoys the pool now that it’s up and going,” said Perry Rocque, the city’s director of parks and recreation services.

Kinsmen Pool, located at 411 Park St., is the only outdoor public pool in Brandon. It was originally supposed to open on June 15, but it remained closed due to mechanical issues. The opening was delayed for a second time after staff discovered leaks in the walls and cracks along water lines.

The news release said the pool has “undergone extensive testing, repairs, and cleaning.”

Rocque said that included leaking infrastructure and a mechanical pump that wasn’t working properly.

“Now everything’s been corrected, and we’re circulating the water and we’re ready to roll, and the pool will open tomorrow,” he said on Tuesday.

Rocque said the pool is expected to remain open until the end of the season, which is usually at the start of September.

“I can’t guarantee if something’s going to go wrong — that could happen to us,” he said. “But right now we’re not anticipating another failure.”

He said the repairs should keep the pool in functioning in future years, but the spring can always present problems the city might not have foreseen.

The pool is currently losing about half an inch of water per night, he said, but added “that’s not a whole lot of water for us.”

The pool is 57 years old and “is starting to show some wear and tear,” Coun. Glen Parker (Ward 9) said earlier this month.

In a text message Tuesday, Mayor Jeff Fawcett said council and staff “will look to collaborate for a longer term solution to outdoor aquatics.” He said that will include presenting the issue to the public for future discussion.

Rocque said he wasn’t aware of the cost of repairs but that it couldn’t have been too much, since he didn’t have to ask council for extra funding.

The city is also reminding people that the pool is open for public, family and lap swim times. Children under seven years old have to be accompanied by a guardian, who must be 13 years or older.
