One man is dead and another injured after a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway on Tuesday.

Blue Hills RCMP responded to the collision at around 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of the highway and Road 101 West.

When officers got to the scene, they saw a water truck had rear-ended a gravel truck, RCMP said in a media release on Wednesday.

Traffic was backed up in the eastbound lanes of the Trans Canada Highway on Tuesday morning after a serious collision between a semi trailer and another vehicle. The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed while first responders worked at the scene and RCMP conducted their investigation.

RCMP said through an initial investigation they determined that the gravel truck was travelling east and “getting up to speed” after turning onto the highway from Curries Landing Road when the large water truck hit it from behind.

The 22-year-old driver of the water truck, who is from Tolstoi, had minor injuries, and his 20-year-old passenger from Stuartburn died at the scene, the release said.

The Mounties said the 59-year-old driver of the gravel truck from the RM of North Cypress-Langford had no physical injuries.

All three men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, RCMP said.

Blue Hills RCMP, which consists of detachments in Brandon, Souris and Carberry, as well as the RCMP Criminal Collision Investigative Team, continue to investigate.
