SOFTBALL

Manitoba opened with a win and took a big loss on day one of competition at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador on Sunday.

Naomi McKay of Waywayseecappo scored twice and had an RBI to lead her club past the hosts 5-2, while Ky Solomon of Shoal Lake had an RBI in her lone at-bat. Kendall Charles of Virden was also in the lineup.

They met powerhouse Ontario later in the day and suffered an 11-1 loss. McKay was 0-for-2 at the plate.

Manitoba meets New Brunswick and Yukon today.

BASEBALL

Manitoba fell 9-7 in its opener in part due to Newfoundland exploding for five runs in the second inning.

Cason Burton of Brandon and Jamie Williamson didn’t appear in the game. Assistant coach John Patmore of Reston is also part of the club.

Manitoba meets Prince Edward Island today.

BOX LACROSSE

Karlee Kohlman of McCreary and Team Manitoba went 2-0 as they opened the Games, beating New Brunswick 3-1 and then walloping Newfoundland and Labrador 18-2. Kohlman had two assists in the second game.

Manitoba faces Saskatchewan today.
