A man assaulted his partner by kicking and punching him in the upper body, police said in a news release.

The partner did not need medical attention.

Police charged a 33-year-old man with assault. He was released on police-imposed conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in October.

Weapon offence

A man was arrested on Saturday after he was allegedly brandishing a knife.

Police were called to an incident in the 900 block of Victoria Avenue at around 4 p.m.

They found a 25-year-old man, who was wearing a face mask, with an open folding knife and arrested him, police said in a news release.

Police charged the man with possession of a weapon and wearing a disguise with intent. He was held in cells to appear later in court.

Firearm charges

Brandon Police Service arrested and charged a man with seven firearm offences and one possession offence after a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon.

BPS conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of 12th Street at around 11:30 a.m.

Officers found open liquor inside the vehicle and took the driver into custody, police said in a news release.

While searching the vehicle, police found a .22-calibre revolver, which the man did not have a valid firearms licence for, the release said.

When police searched the man, they found ammunition in his pocket, a knife in his boot and two baggies of mushrooms.

The man was held at BPS to appear in court Monday morning.

Machete chase after bear-spray attack

Brandon police arrested two males after an altercation Sunday at a convenience store involving bear spray and a machete.

Three males entered a business in 800 block of First Street at around 7 p.m. A short time later, another group of three males followed them inside.

One person from the second group took out a can of bear spray and sprayed the other group, police said in a news release.

In response, one of the males in the first group allegedly pulled out a machete and chased the person with bear spray through the store.

Both groups fled before police got to the scene.

Officers were responding to an unrelated call in the 1300 block of Eighth Street at around 8 p.m. when they came across two men who were identified as victims of the bear spray in the earlier incident.

One of them was a 14-year-old boy who allegedly brandished the machete. Police said they were able to identify him through video surveillance.

Police arrested the boy, and he was later released on an undertaking and scheduled to appear in court in November.

Later that night, at around 10 p.m., officers were checking on a person near the intersection of College Street and Second Avenue.

Police identified an 18-year-old man from the surveillance footage as the male who sprayed the bear spray, police said.

While speaking with the man, he told police his address but he was bound by a release order to reside at a different address.

Police arrested him and held him in custody overnight. He was charged with assault with a weapon and failure to comply with a release order, and was scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.
