TILLEY – Mounties in southern Alberta are looking for a driver after a man was struck dead on the side of a highway while checking his own vehicle for collision damage.

RCMP say they were called early Monday about an abandoned vehicle near Tilley, 213 kilometres southeast of Calgary.

Officers found the damaged vehicle with its doors open and a 30-year-old man dead on the side of the road.

Police believe the man hit an animal and was checking for damage when he was hit by another vehicle, which did not remain at the scene.

Police did not say what kind of animal was struck, and say the driver who fled could be charged with hit and run.

Investigators are looking for a grey or silver Volkswagen with damage to the driver’s side.
