Assault by choking

A man who allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend and wouldn’t let her leave her home was arrested on Monday.

Police received a report of an assault on Braecrest Drive on Sunday and went to the residence.

The man allegedly forced his way inside and assaulted the woman, police said in a news release.

Police said he blocked the doorway and threatened her — preventing her from leaving — but the woman was eventually able to run away.

Police searched the home, but the suspect had already fled.

On Monday, officers went back to the residence since they believed he may be inside. After searching the home, they found a man hiding in a bathroom closet, police said.

The 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault, assault by choking and forcible confinement.

The man was held in custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Credit card theft

Brandon Police Service arrested a man on Sunday after he allegedly went into a woman’s vehicle, stole her wallet and used her credit card.

The victim, a resident in the 800 block of Russell Street, cancelled all her credit cards, but not before one fraudulent purchase was made at a store on First Street, police said in a news release.

Police said video surveillance from the store identified a 22-year-old man.

Police found and arrested the man in his home on Monday at around 8 p.m. He was charged with possession of property obtained by crime and fraudulent use of a credit card.

The man was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in November.

Drugs and weapons

Brandon Police Service arrested a woman after executing a search warrant on Buttercup Bay that led them to finding drugs and weapons on Monday.

Prior to the search, a 44-year-old woman left the residence and was taken into custody during a traffic stop.

When officers searched her vehicle, they found and seized roughly nine grams of methamphetamine, $70 in cash, a cellphone, several knives, a baseball bat and multiple contaminated digital scales, police said in a news release.

Officers subsequently searched the home on Buttercup Bay and found an additional 30 grams of methamphetamine in the woman’s bedroom as well as ammunition, weapons and related equipment, police said.

Another woman who was an occupant of the home was identified and released without charges.

The 44-year-old woman was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court in October.
