The Brandon Humane Society’s signature fundraiser, the Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon, drew one of its largest crowds in recent years on Sunday morning at Kin Park.
Running from 10 a.m. to noon, the 22nd annual event brought together families, volunteers, sponsors and different breeds of dogs.
The dogs, which are current rescues and adopted alumni, had a morning of walking with their owners, games and community spirit, society manager Tracy Munn told the Sun during the event.

“This is one of the best turnouts we’ve had in years,” Munn said. “We love to see all the dogs out here, some of our alumni, and, of course, the money raised so we can continue this work. It’s just huge.”
Munn estimated well over 100 people participated, with the crowd easily exceeding 200 when counting dogs. “There are definitely more dogs and more people this year than last,” she said.
She said that the “Walk-A-Thon” is a cornerstone fundraiser for the Brandon Humane Society, which has served the community for decades by sheltering abandoned and surrendered animals, providing them medical care and facilitating adoptions. Operating without government funding, the organization relies on donations, volunteers, and events like Sunday’s to cover the costs of food, veterinary bills and daily care.
Participants enjoyed more than just a scenic walk. The morning featured face painting for kids, giveaways from sponsors, a free barbecue and treats. Veterinary clinics, including “The Paw, Carberry, and Brandon Hills were also recognized for their support.”
Munn said the society usually raises between $38,000 and $42,000 through the event, though exact numbers won’t be known until later this week as pledges continue to come in.

The weather, a perennial concern for outdoor events, once again co-operated. “This is my 20th year organizing, and I can honestly say we’ve been blessed with great weather every single time,” Munn said with a smile.
For many, the walk is as much about community as fundraising. “We’re just so grateful to everyone who comes out, to our volunteers, and to all our sponsors,” Munn said. “It’s really about people who love animals coming together, having fun, and helping us keep doing what we do.”
