The City of Brandon is set to remove 71 ash trees in the downtown area due to their deteriorating health.

Limited space to grow, recurring drought, environmental damage, road salt and an infestation of jumping tree lice have contributed to the “notable decline in the health of the trees,” the city said in a news release Wednesday.

City crews will remove the black and Manchurian ash trees starting next Monday.

They are located along Seventh, Ninth, 10th and 11th streets, between Pacific and Louise avenues. Some trees along Rosser Avenue will also be cut down.

“While removing these trees is a difficult decision, it is necessary to stop the spread of invasive pests and protect the remaining urban canopy,” said Bryce Wilson, the city’s manager of parks.

“The health of Brandon’s downtown trees is vital to the character and resilience of our city.”

The jumping tree lice, which are officially called cottony ash psyllid, feed on the sap of ash leaves, which leads to leaf discolouration and curling, leaves falling early and canopy thinning, according to the city.

There are currently no effective pesticides or known natural predators for the tiny, yellow-and-black bugs.

Next spring, the city will replant trees with a “diverse selection” of species.

“Our team is committed to restoring and enhancing our green spaces, and we look forward to launching a replanting program in spring 2026 that will introduce a variety of species for a stronger, healthier future,” Wilson said.
