United Way Brandon & District’s largest indoor garage sale returned this weekend, bringing together more than 140 vendors and thousands of shoppers in support of local community programs.

The event has become a “tradition” since it first launched in 2010. Despite losing a couple of years during the COVID-19 pandemic, this year marks the 13th edition, ceo Cynamon Mychasiw told the Sun during the event.

“What started as just half a room and a handful of vendors has grown into a full house with a waiting list every year,” she said. “People love being able to come in and essentially attend 140 garage sales all in one spot.”

The sale offered everything from household items and antiques to baked goods and fresh vegetables. Vendors ranged from families decluttering their garages to seasoned sellers who travel to sales across the province.

“We’ve got a little more variety this year, including more fresh vegetables than we’ve had before,” Mychasiw said. “It’s always a great mix of people and products.”

Attendance continues to be strong, with organizers expecting between 2,500 and 3,000 visitors throughout the day. The spring edition of the event, set for April 18, is typically the busiest of the year, often drawing over 3,000 shoppers.

While expansion has been considered in the past, Mychasiw said the current setup strikes the right balance. “It’s nice and full this way, and we want to make sure our vendors have the best experience they can for a full day,” she explained.

Beyond bargains, the sale plays an important role in supporting the community. Proceeds from vendor table rentals, 50/50 draws, and door admissions all go directly back into United Way programs.

“Everything that happens here today goes right back into the community,” Mychasiw said. “When people come out and support us, they’re really supporting their friends, families, and neighbours.”
