CROWSNEST PASS – Rescue teams are continuing their search for a five-year-old boy after he disappeared from a southern Alberta campground.

Peter Alfred from Southern Alberta Search and Rescue said Darius Macdougall was reported missing Sunday after he didn’t return from a walk with his siblings to their campsite near Island Lake Campground, south of Crowsnest Pass.

Searchers have scoured the area by land and air, and Alfred said there’s no reason to believe the search won’t end in a “positive outcome.”

“We are … conducting what we would describe as a fine search,” Alfred told reporters Monday afternoon. “Almost shoulder to shoulder with our members, checking under logs and root balls and whatnot.”

RCMP said the terrain being searched is highly technical and they’re asking the public not to travel into the search area to help.

Police said the boy has autism, which may prevent him from responding to others.

Darius is described as four feet tall with short brown hair, and he was last seen wearing a blue-grey hoodie and sweatpants.

RCMP Sgt. Mark Amatto said fewer resources are dedicated to overnight searches for safety reasons.

“We’re optimistic that we can find him … hopefully we can bring him home safe today,” Amatto said.
