The woman said her ex-boyfriend was under the influence of methamphetamine, and after entering her home, he punched her and threw a garbage can at her, police said in a news release Monday.
The man allegedly forced her out of the home and remained inside.
When officers got to the home, the front door was barricaded with a table. Police went inside and found the man in the basement holding a hatchet.
The man was arrested and held in detention cells overnight for court on Monday.
He faces charges of break and enter, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

Cocaine, cash seized
Brandon police arrested a man and woman on Sunday after finding cocaine and cash during a traffic stop, police say.
Officers stopped a vehicle in the 100 block of 10th Street at around 10:45 p.m.
During the stop, officers seized roughly seven grams of cocaine and $5,000 in Canadian cash, which they believed to be proceeds of crime, police said in a news release.
The 39-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, both from Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, were arrested and jointly charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.
They were released from custody with a November court date.
