BRANDON – A teen accused of attacking people with a sword at a high school in Brandon, Man., faces upgraded charges and may be sentenced as an adult.
The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested after a suspect entered Neelin High School in June, wearing a disguise and brandishing a sword.
Police later said people of colour and immigrants were targeted, and one student suffered deep cuts on his hands, chest and thigh.

Officers and first responders attended quickly and were recognized in July for their efforts by the Manitoba government.
The accused was originally charged with one count of attempted murder as well as two counts of assault with a weapon against a staff member and a second student.
Manitoba’s prosecution service says the assault charges have been upgraded to attempted murder, and the Crown will seek to have an adult sentence imposed if there is a guilty finding.
“It is the Crown’s position that there is reasonable likelihood of conviction and that it is in the public interest to proceed on the charges of attempted murder with respect to all three victims,” the government’s central communications agency wrote in a statement Wednesday.
“The Crown has also given notice in court that it intends to seek an adult sentence in this matter, should the accused plead guilty or be convicted.”
