• 60 YEARS AGO — Garry Clark won the Souris cross-country race of 2 2/4 miles with an excellent time of 14:37 at Souris. Clark came in ahead of David Stephenson of Souris and Harvey Laluk from Brandon Collegiate.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Jim Connor booted a pair of goals in helping Spartans clinch first place in the Brandon Senior Soccer League’s Wally Newton Cup series via a 4-0 win over Blues. Dave Bebbington and Al Edwards also scored for the winners who received shutout goaltending from Bryce Randall.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Al Robertson of Hamiota has been named the Canadian Federation of Amateur Baseball’s coach of the year for 1985.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Chad Laluk scored twice in Brandon’s 6-2 Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League pre-season win over Southwest. Ryan Kristolovich, Bob Faktor, Bryce Couling and Tory Blandford also scored for the Wheat Kings.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Bryce Lamb scored four goals to lead Southwest to an 8-2 thrashing of the Parkland Rangers as the host Cougars finished a seven-team Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League tournament on a winning note.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Shilo Country Club seems to be a good place to play for provincial titles for Brandon high school golf teams. Last year, the Crocus Plainsmen boys won a banner, and this year the Vincent Massey girls celebrated a title. Hayley Shanks, Brynne Paschinski,Tianna Slate and Sydney Stritz posted a team score of 303 to win the 18-hole tournament by 17 strokes over the St. Mary’s Flames.
