The Boreal Trail in Riding Mountain National Park has reopened following years of repairs to the loop.

The 1.2-kilometre trail was closed in 2022 because of flood and erosion damage, according to the park’s communications officer, Jennifer Gustafson. The loop reopened with new bridges, boardwalks and a new trailhead.

“Work to remove damaged infrastructure, including bridges and boardwalks, began in late 2022, and new construction began once planning was completed in 2023,” Gustafson said in an email.

In 2022, multiple heavy snowstorms and excessive rain severely damaged the infrastructure along the trail located off Highway 10, the federal government says on its website.

“Parks Canada has now finished the final elements of trail grading and signage, and is pleased to welcome hikers back to this popular trail,” Gustafson said.

The trail will be open year-round.

Lakeshore Trail was also recently reopened following reconstruction, while Ominnik Marsh Trail remains partially closed after a “wind event” last year.

“The former loop through the marsh is closed because many boardwalk sections were damaged beyond repair,” Gustafson said. “Planning is underway for a new boardwalk.”

Visitors can still access the marsh boardwalk at two points on the trail.
