The Rural Municipality of Cornwallis has called a byelection for the reeve position, but no date has been set.

The rural council approved the byelection and hired a senior election official at a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Interim chief administrative officer Holly Krysko said the RM hopes to hold the byelection by the end of November.

“Hopefully there’s a little bit of wiggle room around that time, possibly a little bit after that, but we do hope to have it done by the end of November,” Krysko said Thursday.

The byelection was triggered after former reeve Sam Hofer resigned in April, following an investigation by the province’s ombudsman that found he contravened the Municipal Act.

Krysko said the timeline for the byelection largely depends on the newly appointed senior election official. Council appointed John Armstrong to the position during the special meeting, which lasted less than three minutes.

The nomination period is yet to start. Krysko said nominations have to be open between 42 and 36 days before the day of the election, but notice has to be given beforehand.

Notice must appear through an advertisement in the local newspaper, or by mail, between seven and 21 days before nominations open, she said.

The municipality was originally hoping to fill the vacant CAO position before calling the byelection, but it’s “taken a bit longer,” Krysko said. “They are still currently actively searching.”

Former councillor Mike Waddell said he is “strongly interested in” running for reeve once the date is set, as long as “it jibes with my work life and my personal life.”

“At this point, I’m watching with interest,” he said.

Waddell said he wishes the municipality didn’t have to hold a byelection at all, as it costs money to do so, but that having it is important for democracy’s sake.
