WINNIPEG – A great horned owl has been set free after it was found trapped in netting outside a Winnipeg police station.
Police say the bird was “dangling and distressed” in the protective netting that shields the station parking lot from golf balls.
Officers, along with the help of Manitoba Conservation and a vet from the Assiniboine Park Zoo, worked together to free the owl.
Police say they attached a sharp knife to a large pole to carefully cut the netting around the bird.
A fishing net was then used to lower it to the ground.
Zoo staff wrapped the bird in a blanket before setting it free.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 26, 2025.
