WINNIPEG – A Manitoba RCMP officer has been charged with assault after an accused shoplifter’s lung was punctured during an arrest.
The Independent Investigation Unit says Mounties were called in July 2024 to a business in Portage la Prairie, west of Winnipeg.
Officers told the watchdog they arrested a suspect trying to flee on a bicycle.
While in custody, the man reported having chest pains and trouble breathing, and he was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a punctured lung.
Const. Ryan MacDonald has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
An RCMP spokesperson says the officer remains on active duty and would not speak to any “internal conduct by the detachment.”
