A Valley River man who allegedly brandished a knife in a road-rage incident was arrested in Dauphin early Wednesday morning.

The 22-year-old victim told Dauphin RCMP that the interaction started after a man with a knife threatened him in the parking lot of a business, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

He fled in his own vehicle, and the man continued to follow him at a “high rate of speed,” Mounties said.

Dauphin RCMP received a complaint about a person brandishing a knife while chasing another vehicle at around 12:45 a.m., and officers were sent to the area.

They found the victim’s vehicle on Mountain Road. The victim said he “felt threatened” and gave a description of the suspect vehicle, the release said.

Not long after, officers stopped the truck at the intersection of Railway Avenue and Buchanon Avenue.

Officers demanded the driver exit the vehicle. When officers asked about other occupants in the vehicle since the windows were heavily tinted, the man would not comply, RCMP said.

After numerous commands, two women exited the truck.

All three were arrested, and police found them to be intoxicated, the release said.

Officers searched the vehicle and seized a small amount of cocaine and a knife, RCMP said.

Dylan Smith, 29, was remanded into custody and charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired operation, operation with a blood-alcohol count of over 0.08, flight from police and failure to comply with a release order.

Police said the men were not known to each other.

The two women, who were 28 and 37 years old and from Valley River First Nation, were later released with no charges.

Dauphin RCMP continues to investigate.
