Brandon School Division Supt. Mathew Gustafson has announced his intention to retire next summer.
Board chair Linda Ross shared Gustafson’s resignation letter during Tuesday night’s general board meeting.
“It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division, with my final day of employment on Aug. 7, 2026,” Ross read from his letter. “I am honoured to have been able to serve the students, parents and staff of the Brandon School Division since 2002.”

In his letter, Gustafson credited his success to the collaboration and professionalism of colleagues across the division.
“I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff.”
The decision to retire came after much reflection on his time in leadership, Gustafson told the Sun after the meeting.
“At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over,” he said. “This allows me to do some different things and still support education in other ways.”
He said the decision to make his retirement effective in 2026 was to give the board time to find his successor.
Gustafson joined the Brandon School Division in 2002 and has served in senior administration for 11 years. He was appointed superintendent in early 2021.
He said he hopes his leadership has contributed to positive experiences for students and staff.
“I don’t think I necessarily need to be remembered personally,” he said. “What matters most is that students have good memories of their time in school and that I’ve played even a small role in helping make that possible.”
Gustafson said he intends to remain active in the community.
“I might be helping my brother-in-law run the combine in the fall,” he said with a laugh, “but I also hope to volunteer and maybe stay involved in education in some way.”
During the meeting, Ross praised Gustafson for his steady leadership and commitment to the division.
“I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” Ross said. “It has been a pleasure working with you, and we’re very appreciative — even if I’d like to curse you a little for resigning.”
Gustafson is a “steadfast rock of competency,” deputy chair Duncan Ross said.
“You’ve always come through for us,” he said. “We all appreciate it, and we’re going to miss you.”
Gustafson’s professionalism and preparedness have earned the board’s confidence throughout his tenure, trustee Kim Fallis said.
“You were always ready with the answers we needed,” Fallis said. “Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”
