Evan Nachtigall started testing his golf game against Manitoba’s best five years ago.

He quickly became one of them, and now he’s on top. The Brandonite was named Golf Manitoba’s male athlete of the year in Winnipeg on Wednesday night.

“It’s obviously cool,” Nachtigall said. “When I saw it come out a month ago, I was hoping I was going to win and I knew there was going to be a good chance with the year I had.

“I feel like the coolest part is I don’t think there’s been someone from Westman before. That was kind of in the back of my mind, too.”

Nachtigall started his 2025 season by winning medallist honours at the Golf Manitoba match play qualifier, carding a 6-under 65 in Winkler before reaching the semifinals at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club.

He captured the Manitoba men’s amateur crown, finishing the three-day tournament 8 under at Southwood Golf and Country Club.

The amateur win earned him an exemption to the Manitoba Open at Breezy Bend Country Club, where he made his PGA Tour Americas debut.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rain for the first two days, and Nachtigall finished towards the bottom of the leaderboard with rounds of 76 and 74.

Nachtigall capped the provincial schedule by teaming up with Drew Jones and shooting 12-under 59 in the four-ball championship at Wheat City Golf Course in August.

“Golf’s just so hard. I said it last night during my speech and everyone laughed at me, but man, golf’s so hard,” Nachtigall said. “You have so many people that lose every week and there’s only one winner. To finally win an event that really matters, I’d consider that a breakthrough.

“It’s not like I didn’t believe in my game before this year, but it takes a lot of time, a bit of luck and the chips need to fall where they do.”

Addison Kartusch of Winnipeg was named the female athlete of the year after defending her women’s amateur title at St. Charles Country Club.
