BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The third-place Wheat Kings faced the Parkland Rangers, the second-place Winnipeg Wild (13-2-1-1) and then had a home-and-home series with the Southwest Cougars in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League last week.
On Sunday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Brandon’s Kevin Knee and Southwest’s Kole Beard traded goals in the first period, and after Crew Elder restored the Wheat Kings lead early in the second period, Jaxsten Hansen-Young and Riley Fluker sniped in the next five minutes to put the Cougars up 3-2.
Beard then salted the game away with another goal in the third period for a 4-2 Cougars victory.
Cooper Dryden and Urijah Moosetail made 14 saves for Brandon, with Nate Brown blocking 23 shots for Southwest.
On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, Hudson Champagne scored the only goal in the six-round shootout as Brandon earned a 4-3 victory.
Cole Dupuis scored twice and Kevin Knee added a single as Brandon built a 3-0 lead, but Southwest’s Hansen-Young, Lobreau and Beard scored in a two-minute stretch late in the third period to tie the game.
Moosetail made 27 saves for Brandon, with Brady Shields blocking 30 shots for Southwest.
On Friday at J&G Homes Arena, Ardan Downey stopped all 32 shots he faced as the Wild earned a 6-0 victory. Cooper Dryden made 30 saves for Brandon.
On Wednesday at J&G Homes Arena, Champagne and Ethan Stanley both scored twice and Owen Stanley, Matthew Dupuis, Jaxson Brick and Knee added singles in an 8-3 Brandon victory over Parkland.
Alex Campbell had a pair of goals for Parkland and Noah Smigelsky also sniped.
Moosetail made 17 saves for Brandon, with Carter Sigurdson and Eddy Person blocking 21 shots for Southwest.
Next weekend, the Wheat Kings visit Southdale Community Centre to meet the Winnipeg Bruins on Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The fourth-place Cougars (9-3-1-2) had the home-and-home with Brandon this week.
The Cougars host Yellowhead at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then visit the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m., and the Eastman Selects at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre on Sunday at 1 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The ninth-place Chiefs (7-8-0-0) were swept by the first-place Winnipeg Thrashers (14-0-0-0) during a doubleheader at Seven Oaks Community Centre.
On Saturday, the Chiefs took it on the chin, with Alec Strachan scoring their only goal in a 7-1 loss.
Sawyer Wallin made 38 saves for Yellowhead, with Nolan Giles blocking just 16 shots for Winnipeg.
On Friday, Strachan scored twice and Oliver Nickel sniped once as the Chiefs built a 3-1 lead, but the Thrashers stormed back with three goals for a 4-3 victory.
Sawyer Wallin made 36 saves for Yellowhead, with Tate Barnaby blocking 32 shots for Winnipeg.
The Chiefs meet the Cougars on Wednesday, and then, at Shoal Lake Communiplex, host the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Norman Northstars on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
After falling to the Wheat Kings on Wednesday, the Rangers (8-4-3-0), who are in a three-way tie for fifth place, met the 10th-place Central Plains Capitals (3-9-1-2) and the Winnipeg Wild.
On Sunday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Alex Campbell gave Parkland a 1-0 lead in the first period, Central Plains scored twice in the middle frame to take the lead but Rangers forward Dayson Martin lit the lamp twice with goals five minutes apart in the middle frame for a 3-2 Parkland win.
Carter Sigurdson made 31 saves for Parkland, with Karsen Dyck blocking 27 shots for Central Plains.
On Saturday at Hockey For All Centre, Chase Kettles stopped all 17 shots he faced in a 4-0 Wild victory.
Sigurdson made 43 saves for Parkland.
The Rangers host the Norman Northstars at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The seventh-place Chiefs (2-3-1-1) and the rest of the the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA took the week off from the regular season, but the Chiefs have a busy weekend coming up.
They host the Interlake Lightning at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Friday at 7:30 p,m., visit Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community to face the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and finish up at the Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre Rink to play the Eastman Selects on Sunday at 3 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
In their next action, the fourth-place Wildcats (4-5-1-0) host the Interlake Lightning at Hartney Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
