BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Wheat Kings (18-6-0-1), who are tied for third with the Winnipeg Bruins (18-2-1-0), had a midweek matchup with the Parkland Rangers and then hosted the seventh-place Eastman Selects (15-7-1-0) on the weekend at J&G Homes Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday, Reid Nicol and Benjamin Sveistrup gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead but the Selects tied the game with a pair of goals in the final three minutes of regulation. In overtime, Jaxson Brick scored a power-play goal at the 2:01 mark to salvage a 3-2 victory for the short-staffed Wheat Kings.

Urijah Moosetail made 29 saves for Brandon, with Carter Warren blocking 24 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday, Hudson Champagne, Nicol, Crew Elder and Peyton Thiessen scored as the Wheat Kings earned a 4-2 victory over the Selects.

Moosetail made 31 saves for Brandon, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking 19 shots for Eastman.

Both Eastman goals came on the power play as Brandon handed the visitors eight power plays.

On Wednesday, Hunter Ethelston gave Brandon a 2-0 lead and then scored his hat-trick goal in the third period as the Wheat Kings earned a 6-2 victory over the Rangers.

Champagne added a pair of goals and Nicol sniped once, with Max Dawson, Matthew Dupuis and Kevin Knee earning two assists each.

Noah Smigelsky and Dayson Martin replied for the Rangers.

Moosetail made 22 saves for Brandon, with Carter Sigurdson and Eddy Person combining to stop 27 shots for Parkland.

The Wheat Kings see action just once this week, with the Central Plains Capitals visiting on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The fifth-place Cougars (15-7-1-2) split with the second-place Winnipeg Thrashers (19-4-1-1) in a weekend doubleheader.

On Sunday, Jordan Knox scored twice and Kole Beard and Shane Elder added singles as the Cougars earned a 4-2 victory over the Thrashers. Brady Shields made 19 saves for Southwest, with Nolan Giles blocking 18 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, Spencer Cullen, Jake Beaty and Eric Berger staked the Cougars to a 3-0 lead, but the Thrashers tied it over a 10-minute stretch in the second period and Russell Aitkenhead scored the winner in the third period in a 4-3 Winnipeg victory.

Nate Brown made 33 saves for Southwest, with Tate Barnaby blocking 16 shots for Winnipeg.

The Cougars head to the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre on the weekend to meet the Kenora Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (12-13-0-0) hosted Parkland on Tuesday and then hit the highway to meet the Winnipeg Bruins and the 11th-place Interlake Lightning (3-19-1-0).

On Sunday at Lundar Arena, Chiefs forward Alec Strachan had a hat trick and Nolan Kozak scored twice as Yellowhead earned a 5-3 victory over Interlake. Landon McGregor made 25 saves for Yellowhead, with Grayson Mcdonald blocking 34 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday at Southdale Community Centre, Mitchell Hill scored twice and added three assists in an 11-0 Winnipeg cakewalk over Yellowhead. McGregor and Sawyer Wallin made 50 saves for Yellowhead, with Zak Matheson blocking all 20 shots he faced for the shutout for Winnipeg.

On Tuesday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Winston Lepp scored twice, including the winner, and Nolan Kozak also sniped as the Chiefs earned a 3-2 victory over the Rangers. Brayden Budolowski and Dayson Martin replied for the Rangers.

McGregor made 31 saves for Yellowhead, with Carter Sigurdson stopping 32 shots for Parkland.

The Chiefs are back in action on Wednesday when they skate into Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place to meet Central Plains at 7:30 p.m. On the weekend, they host the Norman Northstars at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Winnipeg Wild on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

After visiting Yellowhead and Brandon, the eighth-place Rangers (11-8-4-0) fell to the sixth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (15-7-0-1) at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.

On Saturday, Landyn Garton, Owen Sigvaldason, Dayson Martin and Alex Campbell scored but the Rangers couldn’t overcome the five goals they allowed in the second period in a 6-4 loss.

Eddy Person and Carter Sigurdson combined to make 33 saves for Parkland, with Brody Peters blocking 36 shots for Pembina Valley.

The Rangers host the Wild on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and then visit Stride Place to meet the Capitals on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fourth-place Chiefs (7-6-1-1) hosted the sixth-place Winnipeg Avros (6-8-2-0) and the first-place Eastman Selects (15-1-0-1) at the Shoal Lake Communiplex in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday, the Carriere family carried the day for the Selects, with Kennedy, Emilie, Isabella and Chloe Carriere all sniping in a 7-0 Eastman win. Various Carrieres also combined for three assists and three minor penalties.

Gracie Johnston made 27 saves for Yellowhead, with Isabelle Labossiere blocking all 24 shots for the shutout.

On Saturday, Haley Chipelski scored twice and Presley Hodson had a goal and an assist as the Chiefs earned a 3-2 victory over the Avros.

Kylie Hack made 29 saves for Yellowhead, with Adriana Almeida blocking 34 shots for Winnipeg.

The Chiefs have the upcoming weekend off and in their final action before Christmas, host the Avros on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 4:30 p.m., and Central Plains on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The third-place Wildcats (8-6-0-4) also met the Avros and Selects, but in the reverse order at Hartney Arena.

On Saturday, Addison Tome stopped all 19 shots she faced and Émilie Carrière had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 Eastman victory.

Shannon Hees made 20 saves for Westman.

On Friday, Ivy Fry and Ivy Perkin both scored twice as the Wildcats beat the Avros 4-2.

Indigo Stone made 17 saves for Westman, with Adriana Almeida blocking 22 shots for Winnipeg.

The Wildcats next see action when the Avros visit on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. In their final game before Christmas, they host Central Plains on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
