LAVAL – The coroner is investigating the death of an 88-year-old woman found outside a retirement home north of Montreal.

Laval police say the woman was found on Monday morning near the Villagia de l’île Paton residence in Laval, Que.

Police spokesman Nicolas Mongeau says a 911 call came in at 6:50 a.m. for medical assistance, but the woman was declared dead at the scene.

No further information was immediately available from police or the owners of the private facility.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature was hovering around -18C around 7 a.m., without the wind chill.

The facility is described as a luxury residence with 281 units, including 42 units for those requiring assistance and 239 for autonomous residents.

A spokesperson for the coroner’s office says coroner Amélie Lavigne has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
