BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The second-place Wheat Kings (24-6-0-1) edged the third-place Winnipeg Bruins (23-3-1-0) and then flattened the 13th-place Kenora Thistles (1-27-0-1) at J&G Homes Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League last week.

In a measure of their dominance in their two wins over Kenora, Brandon had a combined 18 goals and Kenora had just 15 shots.

On Sunday, Crew Elder scored twice and Hunter Ethelston, Jaxson Brick, Hudson Champagne, Matthew Dupuis, Kale Jones and Benjamin Sveistrup added singles in an 8-0 victory.

Urijah Moosetail made five saves for Brandon, with Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 50 shots for Kenora.

On Saturday, Hudson Champagne had a hat trick and Hunter Ethelston scored twice in a 10-0 rout of the Thistles.

Elder, Dupuis, Sveistrup, Ethan Stanley and Owen Stanley added singles.

Cooper Dryden made 10 saves for Brandon, with Tyson Ponton blocking 38 shots for Kenora.

On Friday, Stanley gave Brandon the lead midway through the first period before the Bruins scored the next three goals. But Cole Dupuis and Matthew Dupuis scored to tie the game, and defenceman Easten Turko sniped the winning goal on the power play midway through the third period in a 4-3 Wheat Kings victory.

Urijah Moosetail made 35 saves for Brandon, with Zak Matheson stopping 28 shots for Winnipeg.

In their next action, the Wheat Kings head north to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The sixth-place Cougars (17-11-1-2) dropped a pair of games at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex against the fifth-place Eastman Selects (20-8-1-1).

On Sunday, Eric Berger had the lone goal as the Cougars fell 6-1.

Nate Brown and Brady Shields made 22 saves for Southwest, with Carter Warren turning aside 31 shots for Eastman.

On Saturday, Jack Polasek scored twice but the Selects responded quickly after both his goals in posting a 4-2 victory. Kole Beard had the primary assist on both Southwest goals.

Brady Shields made 21 saves for Southwest, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath blocking 28 shots for Eastman.

The Cougars host the Yellowhead Chiefs on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then head to Winnipeg to meet the Wild at Hockey For All Centre on Friday at 7:45 p.m., and the Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (14-8-0-0) split with the fourth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (22-7-2-0) for a weekend set at Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday, Nolan Kozak and Alec Strachan both scored twice and Ethan Turchinski also sniped as the Chiefs earned a 5-2 upset victory.

Sawyer Wallin made 39 saves for Yellowhead in his first appearance since Nov. 15, with Nolan Giles blocking 26 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday, one-time Wheat Kings prospect Julian Fedora had two goals and three assists as the Thrashers earned an 8-3 decision. Alec Strachan, Winston Lepp and Nolan Kozak scored for the Chiefs.

Landon McGregor made 38 saves for Yellowhead, with Nolan Giles blocking 27 shots for Winnipeg.

Coming up, after visiting Southwest on Wednesday, Yellowhead hosts the Eastman Selects at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The seventh-place Rangers (16-9-4-0) split a a weekend doubleheader with the 10th-place Central Plains Capitals (8-18-1-2) in a weekend doubleheader at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.

On Saturday, the Capitals raced out to a 2-0 lead and earned a 4-2 victory. Dayson Martin and Landyn Garton had power-play goals for the Rangers.

Eddy Person made 21 saves for Parkland, with Riley Foster blocking 40 shots for Central Plains.

On Friday, Brandon’s Gavyn Yon had a goal and two assists and Alex Campbell sniped twice as the Rangers built a 3-0 lead and cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Capitals.

Noah Smigelsky, Dayson Martin and Ashton Dutkewich had the other Parkland goals. Carter Sigurdson made 28 saves for Parkland, with Karsen Dyck blocking 14 shots for Central Plains.

In their next action, the Rangers host the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fourth-place Chiefs (8-8-1-2) got some extra hockey in as they travelled to Winnipeg for a pair of 3-2 games that ended in shootouts against the fifth-place Avros (7-8-2-1) and the first-place Ice (18-1-0-1) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday at Hockey For All Centre, Ice forward Kate Cairns scored in the fourth round of the shootout as Winnipeg earned a 3-2 victory.

Callee Despiegelaere had given the Chiefs an early lead and Rose Cochrane tied the game for them in the third period.

Kylie Hack made 40 saves for the Chiefs, with Gina Plett turning aside 21 shots for the Ice.

On Saturday at Seven Oaks Arena, the Avros took a 2-0 but Nicole Rozdeba and Despiegelaere tied it early in the third period and Emma Pollock and Cochrane scored in the shootout for a 3-2 Yellowhead win.

Hack made 22 saves for Yellowhead, with Adriana Almeida stopping 43 shots for Winnipeg.

On the weekend, the Chiefs travel to Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre to meet the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 5:15 p.m., and then return to Seven Oaks Arena to play the Avros again on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The third-place Wildcats (9-6-0-4) return on Sunday when they visit Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to play the Interlake Lightning.
