BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The Wheat Kings (26-6-0-1), who are tied with the Winnipeg Bruins for second place, swept the 12th-place Norman Northstars (2-32-1-2) at Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.
On Sunday, Kevin Knee had a pair of goals and the Wheat Kings received singles off the sticks of Benjamin Sveistrup, Matthew Dupuis, Cole Dupuis and Crew Elder in a 6-1 Brandon win. Easten Turko had two assists.
Cooper Dryden, whose shutout bid was spoiled with 4:31 remaining by Cam Kaludjak’s power-play goal, made 19 saves for Brandon, with Westyn Hlady stopping 34 shots for Norman.
On Saturday, Hudson Champagne had two goals and an assist, and Owen Stanley, Crew Elder and Knee also dented the twine as the Wheat Kings won 5-2.
Urijah Moosetail made 12 saves for Brandon, with Hlady blocking 34 shots for Norman.
The Wheat Kings visit the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m., and the Eastman Selects at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre on Sunday at 1 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
The sixth-place Cougars (18-13-1-1) hosted the Yellowhead Chiefs and travelled to Winnipeg for games against the first-place Wild (27-3-1-2) and the fourth-place Thrashers (24-7-2-0).
On Saturday afternoon at Seven Oaks Community Centre, Tate Barnaby made 27 saves and Dixon Hartwich and Noah Alexander assisted each other’s goals as the Thrashers earned a 3-0 shutout victory. Brady Shields made 30 saves for Southwest.
On Friday at Hockey For All Centre, the Cougars were held without a shot in the third period as they fell 5-0 to the Wild. Nate Brown made 35 saves for Southwest, with Ardan Downey blocking 12 shots for Winnipeg.
On Wednesday, Kole Beard, Jake Beaty, Jack Polasek and Cole Lobreau scored as the Cougars topped the Chiefs 4-1. Alec Strachan replied for Yellowhead.
Brady Shields made 27 saves for Southwest, with Sawyer Wallin blocking 30 shots for Yellowhead.
The Cougars kick off a seven-game home stand when the Interlake Lightning visit on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
After visiting Southwest on Wednesday, the ninth-place Chiefs (14-21-0-0) had a home doubleheader against the fifth-place Eastman Selects (22-9-1-1) at Shoal Lake Communiplex. On Sunday, Nolan Kozak and Brody Bohemier scored but the Chiefs fell 3-2 to the Selects. Landon McGregor made 32 saves for Yellowhead, with Carter Warren blocking 20 shots for Eastman.
On Saturday, the Chiefs fell behind 3-0 but ultimately lost 4-3 to the Selects after a furious third-period comeback failed. Nolan Kozak scored twice and Winston Lepp added a single.
McGregor made 32 saves for Yellowhead, with Warren turning aside 35 shots for Eastman.
The Chiefs host Parkland on Tuesday at 8 p.m., and then head to the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre for a weekend set against the Kenora Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The eighth-place Rangers (16-11-4-0) met the Winnipeg Bruins (26-3-1-0) for a doubleheader at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.
On Sunday, Bruins forward Antonio Correia scored goals three minutes apart in the first period and then added a pair of assists in the second as Winnipeg cruised to an 8-1 win.
Dayson Martin sniped for the Rangers.
Carter Sigurdson made 31 saves for Parkland, with Logan German blocking 13 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday, Noah Hanneson had the lone goal as the Chiefs fell 7-1. Carter Sigurdson made 34 saves for Parkland, with Zak Matheson blocking just seven shots for Winnipeg.
The Rangers have a busy week ahead, meeting Yellowhead at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday at 8 p.m., hosting the Interlake Lightning on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and visiting the Pembina Valley Hawks at Morden’s Access Event Centre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
GIRLS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The fifth-place Chiefs (9-8-2-2) met the second-place Eastman Selects (18-1-1-1) and the fourth-place Winnipeg Avros (10-8-2-1) in a pair of overtime games in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.
On Sunday at Seven Oaks Arena, Presley Hodson scored in the first period and the Chiefs nursed a 1-0 lead late into the third period, but with 6:04 left, Kennedy Simpson tied the game and Cali Lavallee sniped 1:46 into overtime as the Avros escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Kylie Hack made 23 saves for Yellowhead, with Anya Kauenhowen making 42 saves for Winnipeg.
On Saturday at Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre, Emma Pollock scored the winner 47 seconds into overtime as the Chiefs beat the Selects 3-2. Hodson and Haley Chipelski also sniped for Yellowhead, with Kylie Hack making 26 saves for Yellowhead. Eastman’s Addison Tomes stopped 20 shots.
The Chiefs have a three-in-three weekend coming up at Shoal Lake Communiplex, with Westman visiting on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Central Plains Capitals skating into town on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Eastman Selects swinging by on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The third-place Wildcats (10-6-0-4) met the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (2-18-01) at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex in their sole action.
Ivy Perkin posted a hat trick and Ava Snyder and Quinn Twordik also scored as the Wildcats earned a 5-1 triumph. Shannon Hees made 29 saves for Westman, with Eleanor Sugimoto and Joslyn Tetlock combining to stop 29 shots for Interlake.
After visiting Yellowhead on Friday, the Wildcats return to Hartney Arena to host the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Central Plains Capitals on Sunday at 5 p.m.
