• 60 YEARS AGO — Ev Barker of Melita, Barry Sambrook of Medora and Garth Seafoot of Nesbitt are the only rinks that have come through the Souris Men’s Bonspiel untouched by the hand of defeat so far in the spiel.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Ken Eastman scored three goals to provide the margin of victory as Virden Oil Kings defeated Wawanesa JV Bobcats 8-5 in a SouthWest Hockey League game. Bob Mallet added a pair while Murray Good, Scott Larway and Herb Braybrook chipped in with singles for the Oil Kings.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Leanne Ellwood tossed in 28 points to lead Killarney Raiders to a 77-23 victory over Souris Sabres in high school varsity girls’ basketball action. Carla Nichol and Dianne Smirl added 10 points each for the winners.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Troy Stewart notched a hat trick to pace the Yellowhead Chiefs to an 8-2 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League win over the Winnipeg Warriors. Clayton McKenzie had two and Bobby Andrews, Jason Zimmer and Ryan Brunel also scored for Yellowhead.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Assiniboine College Cougars hockey team picked up a victory in its debut in the Central Plains Athletic Conference, beating Steinbach Bible College 4-3. Jarrod Evanyshyn, Joel Heggie, Tyler Matheson and Mike Beamish scored for the Cougars.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Deloraine’s Ashton Bell scored twice, including the game-winning goal, in Canada’s 4-0 semifinal win over Russia in the world under-18 women’s hockey championship in St. Catherines, Ont.
