A recent Brandon University graduate is going to Montreal to interview as a national finalist for McGill University’s McCall MacBain Scholarships.
Aimée Schmidt graduated from BU last year with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and is applying to master’s programs in the same field at McGill.
She was one of more than 700 Canadians to apply for the scholarship and is among 53 Canadian finalists to go to Montreal for interviews, with accommodations and travel costs paid for. There are also 38 finalists from other countries.
Schmidt is BU’s first finalist for the scholarship, the university said.
“Being named a finalist is both humbling and energizing,” Schmidt said in a BU news release. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and for the many mentors, peers and experiences that helped bring me to this point.”
The McCall MacBain Scholarships were established with a $200-million gift in 2019 and are Canada’s largest leadership-based scholarships for master’s and professional studies. Scholars receive substantial funding to pursue an eligible degree at McGill, including a $2,300 monthly living stipend during academic terms and summer funding options, the release said.
Winners are also paired with mentors and coaches and can participate in an interdisciplinary leadership program. A relocation grant is also available for those moving to Montreal.
“This will be my second visit to Montreal, and I’m excited to explore the city more fully,” Schmidt said. “I hope to spend time in Old Montreal, use public transit to wander, and immerse myself in the city’s history and culture.”
Schmidt is set to interview with academic, business, government and social-sector leaders. Up to 30 applicants will be selected after interviews. Canadian finalists not selected will be eligible to receive $10,000 for their studies at the university.
Scholarship chair Marcy McCall MacBain said the finalists have shown remarkable promise in their communities, noting the scholarships aim to support “emerging leaders who demonstrate integrity, kindness, curiosity, and courage.”
For the 2027 cohort, applications open this June.
