BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The Wheat Kings (34-6-0-3), who are tied for second with the Winnipeg Wild (34-5-1-2) scored a lot of goals in winning a pair of games against the fifth-place Eastman Selects (27-13-1-2) and the seventh-place Pembina Valley Hawks (23-17-1-1) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Owen Stanley had a hat trick, Reid Nicol scored twice and Crew Elder and Jaxson Brick added singles in a 7-2 Wheat Kings win.

Both goalies faced 39 shots, with Cooper Dryden making 37 saves for Brandon, and Koen Bleznuk stopping 32 for Pembina Valley.

On Thursday at Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre, Brandon built a 7-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the game and then hung for a wild 8-6 victory.

Kevin Knee scored twice, with singles coming from Ethan Stanley (17 seconds into the game), Kale Jones, Etienne Visser, Reid Nicol, Hudson Champagne and Ty Aldcroft.

Urijah Moosetail made 29 saves for Brandon, with Zaiden McDonald Horvath and Carter Warren combining to stop 22 shots for Eastman.

They now have at least a point in their last 25 games, with a record of 23-0-0-2 in that time.

The Wheat Kings head out on the road to visit Steinbach’s Southeast Event Centre to meet Eastman on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning at Teulon-Rockwood Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the final week of the regular season, they host the Winnipeg Bruins on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m., and the Yellowhead Chiefs on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. — both at J&G Homes Arena — and then finish up at the Shoal Lake Communiplex against the Chiefs on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The sixth-place Cougars (24-16-1-2) met Parkland midweek and then visited the 11th-place Interlake Lightning (11-29-1-0) and the Winnipeg Wild.

On Sunday at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre, the Wild blew open a close game with five goals in the second period en route to an 8-0 victory.

Chase Kettles faced 20 shots in posting the shutout for Winnipeg, with Brady Shields and Nate Brown combining to make 32 saves for Southwest.

On Saturday at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex, Coleton Koop scored twice and Eric Berger, Jack Polasek and Liam Magwood also sniped in a 5-2 Cougars victory.

Nate Brown made 22 saves for Southwest, with Grayson Mcdonald blocking 41 shots for Interlake.

On Wednesday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Kole Beard and Mac McCorrister put Southwest up 2-0 in the first period, Alex Campbell tied it for Parkland with two goals in the second, but before the period was out, Taylor Lockhart restored the lead for the Cougars with two of his own.

The hosts put the game away in the third period on goals by Evan Raes and Eric Berger in a 6-2 Southwest win.

Brady Shields made 22 saves for Southwest, with Carter Sigurdson and Eddy Person combining to stop 28 shots for Parkland.

The Cougars host Parkland at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and the Winnipeg Wild visit on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Southwest then heads to Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

They hit the road for the final weekend, visiting Teulon-Rockwood Arena to tangle with Interlake on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m., and Winnipeg’s Southdale Community Centre to meet the Bruins on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (18-25-1-0) earned a pair of wins over the Rangers and the 13th-place Kenora Thistles (2-38-0-1)

On Sunday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Winston Lepp opened the scoring 72 seconds into the game, Grady McNish posted a hat trick, Carter White sniped twice and Redden Richmond, Wyatt Njegovan, Nolan Kozak and Ethan Turchinski also added goals in a 10-3 Yellowhead victory over Kenora.

Landon McGregor made 33 saves for Yellowhead, with Tyson Ponton and Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 39 shots for Kenora.

On Friday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, the Rangers went up 2-0 on goals by Ashton Dutkewich but the Chiefs scored the next four goals en route to a wild 6-5 victory.

Grady McNish and Nolan Kozak both had two goals for Yellowhead, with Winston Lepp and Redden Richmond adding singles.

Alex Campbell and Brayden Budolowski also scored for Parkland.

Sawyer Wallin made 34 saves for Yellowhead, with Eddy Person blocking 21 shots for Parkland.

The Chiefs visit Winnipeg’s Southdale Community Centre to meet the Bruins on Thursday at 7 p.m., and host the Winnipeg Wild on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

They finish the season with a home-and-home series against Brandon at J&G Homes Arena on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Shoal Lake on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1:30.

PARKLAND RANGERS

After the midweek losses to the Cougars and Chiefs, the eighth-place Rangers (21-17-4-1) took out some frustration on Kenora at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place.

On Saturday, Alex Campbell had four goals and three assists, Noah Smigelsky had three goals and two assists, Landyn Garton had two goals and three assists and Dayson Martin had a goal and three assists as the Rangers romped to a 13-3 victory over Kenora.

Miguel Van Den Driessche and Noah Hanneson both had a goal and an assist and Owen Sigvaldason also sniped. Carter Sigurdson made 18 saves for Parkland, with Keanu Waasa’aanakwad blocking 24 shots for Kenora.

The Rangers visit Southwest on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and then have their final three games at home, meeting the Winnipeg Thrashers on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

They finish up against the Winnipeg Wild on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The fifth-place Chiefs (11-10-3-3) earned three points in weekend games at Shoal Lake Communiplex against the seventh-place Pembina Valley Hawks (8-17-1-3) and the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (3-22-0-2) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Saturday, Teagan Bragg’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout was the winner as the Lightning emerged with a 2-1 victory.

Avery Mcgonigal scored Yellowhead’s goal in regulation, and Haley Chipelski had the lone marker in the shootout for the Chiefs.

Kylie Hack made 26 saves for Yellowhead plus two in the shootout, with Eleanor Sugimoto turning aside 32 shots for Interlake and three in the shootout.

On Friday, Courtney Cochrane, Rose Cochrane and Callee Despiegelaere scored and Gracie Johnston made 24 saves in a 3-1 Chiefs victory over the Hawks. Hannah Bannister stopped 36 shots for Pembina Valley.

The Chiefs complete their 28-game regular season at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre when they meet the Ice on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The third-place Wildcats (16-7-0-5) finished up their regular season at Hartney Arena, also meeting Interlake and Pembina Valley.

On Saturday, Ivy Fry and Ivy Perkin staked the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead but they needed Ava Snyder’s goal midway through the third period to emerge with a 3-2 victory. Indigo Stone made 21 saves for Westman, with Madison Froese turning aside 27 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Friday, Perkin scored twice and Chloe Astle, Fry, Rachel Lyver, Kasia Baranyk and Hadley Robertson also sniped in a 7-1 Wildcats rout over the Lightning.

Shannon Hees made 12 saves for Westman, with Joslyn Tetlock turning aside 22 shots for Interlake.
