Brandon Sun reporter Alex Lambert won a national gold medal for excellence in student journalism last weekend at the John H. McDonald Awards ceremony in Vancouver.
The gold medal for arts & culture was awarded to Lambert on Saturday for his feature story, “Scaring frogs, saving culture.”
The first-place finish recognized the feature as the best example of arts & culture journalism by a student in 2025.

“I’m honoured — I didn’t think I would win, honestly,” said Lambert.
“A lot of the articles I went up against were pretty heavy-hitting, about heavier subjects, and mine was about frogs.”
The winning feature details how the community of St-Pierre-Jolys has continued a frog-scaring activity for nearly 50 years as a way to promote and cherish French culture.
It was published in the student magazine at Red River College Polytechnic in March 2025.
Lambert joined The Brandon Sun in May following his graduation.
Lambert, who covers the political beat for the Sun, extended his thanks to the classmates, editors and community members who helped him with the story, which was put together over several months during his time at the college.
The award is granted annually by Canadian University Press.
