WINNIPEG — A fundraiser for a sports scholarship set up to honour the memory of a Winnipeg teenager who died after a skiing accident at Asessippi ski area last weekend raised more than $100,000 on its first day.
Cam Orloff died after being airlifted to Winnipeg from Russell last Saturday. He was 19.
The Cameron Orloff Memorial Sports Fund was set up on GoFundMe on Thursday in the wake of Orloff’s death. It has a goal of $110,000 and by Friday at 5:30 p.m., it was just over $1,000 from reaching that amount.

“Cameron Jack Orloff was a light in all of our lives and gone much too soon,” the fundraiser says.
“We want to keep his memory alive so he can continue to touch many more … The aim would be to support children who may not otherwise have had this opportunity. We are hoping, with financial support, kids for years to come can have the same experiences that was so meaningful to our Cam.”
A member of Orloff’s family could not be reached for comment.
Orloff graduated from Kelvin High School and played on the school’s hockey team as a forward and as assistant captain.
A spokesperson for the Winnipeg School Division said no one from the division or the school will be commenting about Orloff.
Earlier this week, in a communication to families of Kelvin students, Tim Cox, the school’s principal, let them know “a former student from our school community experienced a serious skiing accident.
“I know that the Kelvin School community is caring and strong and that we will support each other through this heartbreaking news … During this difficult time our heartfelt support is with the student and family.”
Orloff played on the school’s hockey team for three years before going on to join the North Winnipeg Satellites in the Capital Region Junior Hockey League.
Shannon Johnston, Asessippi Ski Resort’s assistant manager, said they’re not able to talk about what happened.
“Our only concern is for the family and all involved,” Johnston said.
STARS spokesperson Blake Robert said a rescue unit was dispatched to nearby Russell on Saturday just after 2 p.m., “for a patient injured in a ski-related incident.
“STARS rendez-voused with local EMS in Russell and the patient was flown by STARS to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.”
