A Melita man faces additional charges after he allegedly assaulted officers on Sunday while being arrested on outstanding warrants for sexual interference.

Just before 8 p.m., RCMP officers went to a home in Melita to arrest a man who was wanted for two counts of sexual interference.

When the man came to the door, officers told him he was under arrest, and the man resisted, RCMP said in a news release on Tuesday.

Police said “a struggle then ensued” between the man and two officers, prompting one of the officers to use a Taser on the suspect.

The suspect continued to fight the officers and made his way into the home, where he barricaded himself in a room, Mounties said.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team, Containment Team and Police Dog Service, along with members of the Deloraine and Turtle Mountain RCMP, came to the scene.

Just after 11:30 p.m., the man came out of the home and officers arrested him.

A 36-year-old man faces additional charges of resisting arrest, disarming a police officer and mischief under $5,000, along with two counts of assaulting a police officer.

The man remains in custody.
