A Birdtail Sioux First Nation man has pleaded guilty to having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl, resulting in her pregnancy.
The 28-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts each of sexual interference and failing to comply with his probation order in Brandon provincial court on Thursday.
Crown attorney Sarah Kok read an agreed statement of facts detailing the man’s offending. The man can’t be named due to a publication ban.

On Sept. 18, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police in Birdtail Sioux First Nation began an investigation into a historical sexual assault involving the accused.
Through the investigation, an individual in the community told police that a 14-year-old girl disclosed that she was pregnant after the accused sexually assaulted her.
The accused, the complainant, family members and friends gave statements to police.
When the man started contacting the girl, he was 26 and she was 14, Kok said.
He communicated with her in person and over Snapchat, and also communicated with friends of hers, who were also under 18, over Snapchat.
He would often meet with the girl and her friends in person and bring them back to his residence in the community. Occasionally, he would buy them alcohol and marijuana, the Crown said.
“Between March 2024 and July 2024, the accused started engaging in what he believed to be a consensual sexual relationship with the complainant. The accused acknowledges that, due to the complainant’s age, she could not have consented to any sexual activity.”
In a statement to police, the man said he never forced the girl to engage in any sexual activity and that she was a “willing participant.”
On more than one occasion in that timeframe, the man had sexual intercourse with the girl while wearing a condom.
Between May and July 2024, the man had sexual intercourse with the girl and acknowledged he didn’t wear a condom and ejaculated inside of her, causing her to get pregnant, Kok said.
In September 2024, when the girl was 18 weeks pregnant, she went to the Women’s Hospital in Winnipeg, where she terminated the pregnancy.
Police obtained judicial authorization to seize the fetus and submit it for forensic analysis.
DNA testing was done on the fetus, and the man provided a sample of his DNA.
It was confirmed that “it is 710 million times more likely that the accused was the biological father of the fetus rather than any other unrelated individual from the Canadian population,” Kok said. “He acknowledges that the complainant became pregnant and that he was the father of said fetus.”
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for the man in Virden provincial court in June.
