An 18-year-old woman was airlifted to a Winnipeg hospital for surgery after an assault left her with a major brain bleed, the woman’s mother said in a Facebook post.

Alison Bukarz was notified that her daughter, Alexis, had a severe seizure and was in the hospital in Brandon early Thursday morning, the post said.

When Bukarz arrived, the doctors said her daughter was the victim of an assault and that she was in critical condition, she said.

“Her skull was fractured and caved in, and she had a major bleed on the brain,” Bukarz said on Facebook.

She said her daughter was airlifted to Winnipeg’s Health Science Centre, where she underwent brain surgery.

As of Friday, Alexis remained in critical condition and in a medically induced coma, her mother said.

A close family friend created a GoFundMe page, which had raised more than $28,000 as of Monday.

Bukarz said she couldn’t speak to the Sun on Monday since she is waiting for details from police about what she can share.

Luke Mathison, 20, was charged with aggravated assault and released from custody on a $5,000 promise to pay, along with several conditions, on Friday.
